Language Working Group
A primary factor in the successful settlement of newcomers to Canada is becoming fluent in one of our official languages. Language skill is the key that unlocks opportunities in employment and education, and helps newcomers become full participants in community life. Failing to advance in a career, mishaps in health care, and social isolation can all be the results of poor language skills. In addition, opportunities for language instruction in Lethbridge are diminishing and those still available typically have long wait times for registration.
Some of the ways we’re helping to improve language learning opportunities:
• Conducting an inventory of current English and French learning opportunities in Lethbridge and online
• Compiling these opportunities into a language “hub” that can be accessed by both learners and service providers
• Hosting a “meet and greet” event for providers to meet each other and for learners to find out what opportunities are available to them
Action Plan
Statement of Purpose: The Lethbridge LIP Language Working Group was established to improve the successful integration of newcomers into the community by supporting language service providers and creating better access to English and French language learning.
