Employment Working Group

Finding suitable employment is something a lot of newcomers will struggle with at some point in their settlement journey, and many will end up in in low-paid labour roles where they aren’t fully utilizing their skills and training.

The Employment Working Group aims to reduce language barriers, facilitate recognition of training and credentials, and help local employers understand and benefit from the unique skills and perspectives of newcomer workers.

Even in the case where employers are enthusiastic about hiring newcomers, they may have concerns about transferability of training, or differences in work and management styles. The working group provides knowledge and resources to support employers, job coaches and newcomer job seekers.

Some of the ways we’re helping to reduce barriers to newcomer employment:

• Hosting webinars for employers focused on retention and support of newcomer employees

• Creation of an employment hub featuring news articles, labour market information, employment programs and job search tools

• Collaborating with other working groups to address issues like housing, transit and language learning that impact newcomer success in the workforce

Action Plan

Statement of Purpose: The Employment Working Group was established to strengthen community capacity to support newcomers in successfully participating in the local labour market. Through collaboration with employers, service providers, and community partners, the group works to improve access to employment information and job-readiness resources. Guided by newcomer experiences and feedback, the group aims to enhance coordination across sectors to ensure newcomers can build meaningful and sustainable careers in our region.
