Using the Healthcare System
Health care in Alberta is free for people with Alberta Health Care numbers, but you have to pay for some things like prescriptions, ambulance rides and chiropractors.

Lethbridge has many doctors’ offices as well as the Chinook Regional Hospital and the Lethbridge Health Unit. If you are not well, call your family doctor. If you think you are seriously ill or injured, go to the nearest emergency department.
It can be confusing to understand which health care service you should use. Here are some tools to help you decide where to go:
• Chinook Primary Care Network: use this tool to get information about the Alberta health care system and where to go for care, or how to find a doctor
• Find a primary care provider: you can search this site for a doctor, or just type in your contact information and someone will help you find one
• Health Link Alberta (call 811 free, and talk to a nurse about your health questions)
• Interim Federal Health Program: if you are a refugee, protected person or a member of certain other immigrant groups, you may be eligible for temporary health coverage until you get signed up for regular Alberta Health Care. Find out if you are eligible.

• Chinook Regional Hospital (has a 24-hour emergency department)
• Mobile Integrated Healthcare: this service provides hospital care to people who have difficulty going to a hospital or medical centre because of illness, age or physical limitations. To access this service, you must be referred by your doctor or another health care provider.
• Primary Care Network clinics (Lethbridge and area)
• Public Health Services (also called Lethbridge Health Unit): provides services to help people stay healthy, including immunizations, disease control, care for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, nutrition and health advice
